Karen Gillan, who plays Amy Pond, the assistant to Matt Smith’s Doctor Who, has reassuring news for his fans. The actor isn’t about to decamp to Los Angeles.
“Matt will be sticking around,” she told me at the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup Final at Cowdray Park Polo Club yesterday. “I think those rumours were made up.”
Karen, left, added that she and Smith have started filming the Doctor Who Christmas special, and adds that the atmosphere on the set is “great.”
Opera singer Katherine Jenkins will make her acting debut in the “most Christmassy” Doctor Who yet.
As filming commences on Matt Smith’s first festive special, Doctor Who officials tease fans on what to expect; including special guest-stars and A Christmas Carol theme.
Regulars Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are set to return as newlyweds Amy and Rory Pond, while Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins makes her acting debut alongside the inimitable Michael Gambon.
Speaking on set this morning Jenkins revealed: “I heard the news that I got the role on my 30th birthday and it was the best birthday present ever!”
It’s not yet clear what character she or Gambon will be playing, however. According to Ben Stephensen, the BBC’s drama controller, the hour-long episode will offer a “clever twist” on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
The show’s executive producer, Steven Moffat, elaborated further, saying: “It’s all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters. And the Doctor. And a honeymoon. And … oh, you’ll see. I’ve honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April.”
Filming finishes at the end of August so keep your eyes peeled for more news then!
Sorry for my little disappearing act there, hopefully that won’t happen again. I have no real excuse for it except for lack of motivation and very little time on my hands.
I’ve also caught up on the hundreds of set pictures so please go check them out as there are some you may not have seen:
